Thracian sanctuary discovered near Velingrad spa resort

The Roman coliseum is one of thousands archaeological landmarks in the city. Unfortunately, many of them are still unpopular with tourists.
During the new archaeological season in Bulgaria the Thracian sanctuary near the Ostrets peak, Velingrad region, will be explored in detail. The religious complex in Northern Rhodopes Mountain is one of the new projects which scientists will work on this summer. According to the representative of National Archaeological Institute, Mrs. Gergova, the sanctuary is of great scientific and historic importance and together with the near medieval church can be turned into an attractive tourist centre.
At the moment Bulgarian archaeologists explore more than 300 places. In their opinion, however, the most important places are Bulgaria’s old capital cities, namely Pliska, Preslav and Veliko Turnovo. It is the third consecutive year Bulgaria’s Ministry of Culture allocates funds for excavation works, restoration and conservation. In depth exploration will be made on Tsarevets hill where the fortress wall is to be restored.
The investigations of huge international projects also continue, for instance, the prehistoric hill near the village of Yunatsite. On that place the most ancient city in Europe was discovered in 2008. The renowned Bulgarian archaeologist Mr.Sirakov continues working on the excavations in the cave “Kozarnika” where his team of experienced archaeologists discovered the oldest traces of human presence in Europe. Another archaeologists discovered prehistoric shrine, dating back to 8000 years, near Sozopol coastal resort. Moreover, finds in Chernomorets (a resort at the Southern Black Sea coast) almost proved the point that Bulgaria was the earliest centre for metal-producing in whole Europe.
