The Russian Church in Sofia, Bulgaria

Built in 1912-1914 by Russian craftsmen, the Russian church St. Nikolay on the corner of Tsar Osvboditel Blvd. and Benkovski St. preserves the style of Moscow decorative arts, painting and imposing architecture. The highest dome is surrounded by four smaller domes.
The Russian church St. Nikolay is easily distinguished from afar because of its pointed golden cross. The five golden domes and the green steeple outshine pretty much everything else on the central boulevard, where the church is located, and this makes the Russian temple one of the most outstanding places of worship in Sofia.
The roof of the church and above the door is covered with green majolica tiles, which are in perfect harmony with the gold-plated domes. The interior of the church contains impressive majolica ornaments, Russian-style icons among which stands out the icon of St.Nikolay the Wonderworker from the Kiev-Pechora Laura. The external decoration of the Russian church is impressive to behold with its rich colours.

A path to the left of the main entrance leads to the crypt, the last resting place of Archbishop Serafim, who served as a head of the Russian church in Bulgaria in the early 20th century. Having been very popular and pious man during his lifetime, Serafim is almost believed to be a saint, so people come here to write prayers on scraps of paper which are then posted into a box next to his sarcophagus.
