Nebet tepe in Plovdiv city competes with Tsarevets with a light show
Anita Valentinova, source : infotourism.net, 03.07.2009
Nebet tepe (“Nebet Hill”) is the historical reason for the foundation of the present day Plovdiv city. The hill still holds remnants from the north wall of the ancient city, a secret entrance with a staircase in the rocky massif, which lead to the right bank of the river Maritsa, artifacts dating back to the 6th century.
With attractive, artistic lighting Nebet tepe in the Ancient part of Plovdiv will compete with the famous Tsarevets hill in the historical town Veliko Tarnovo.
The project is already underway and it has commenced with a massive clean up of the piles of garbage, announced the deputy-mayor Georgi Shopov. “This place hasn’t been cleaned properly for 30 years. Therefore, now we came across some amazing findings”, announced the team of researchers. A 20 meter high gate, which had been buried until now, was also discovered. After a consultation with archaeologists, the team came to the conclusion that apostle Pavel had passed through this gate. Hence, it is likely to be named after the saint. “The device is unique as it passes under the fortified wall and leads to the cliffs”, said workers. They have also seen ancient vaults which were preserved in excellent condition. The municipality will take care of cleaning up the gate and the fortified walls so as to construct roads suitable for tourists.
Nebet TepeNebet Tepe is one of the legendary hills of Plovdiv city. Together with Dambaz and Taksim hill, it forms the so called Three Hills in the central part of Plovdiv city. Nebet Tepe is high 203m and standing on its top, one can admire at a scenic view over the whole city. It is the place where the famous landmark, the Old part of Plovdiv city is located. Everyone can take delight in the enchanting architecture from the period of Bulgarian Renaissance. The hill also features remnants from the Thracian period, dating back to 3th century B.C., as well as from the Roman times. Fortified walls and parts of an ancient settlement are preserved on the hill. The antique settlement of Nebet Tepe flourished in the 12th century and it became the Thracian village Evmolpiya, one of the first urbanized centres in the Southeastern Europe.
Besides walls, big water reservoirs, were constructed during the Middle Ages, mostly during the period of the Second Bulgarian Empire. Those reservoirs were used in case of enemy’s siege. The present day preserved rectangular water reservoir is particularly interesting due to its measures and capacity of 300 000litres.
Plovdiv Nebet Hill is placed second in the ranking of the prestigious magazine “Forbs”- 11 unique landmarks in Eastern Europe which the keen tourist should visit.
