“Excellent Bulgarian tourism destination” competition started

State Agency for Tourism declared the beginning of the new 2d edition of the competition “Excellent tourism destination”. The competition will be carried out this year under the slogan “Nature Welcomes You”, as the protected areas in Bulgaria are 952, so the focus will be on tourism in protected areas.

The competition is a part of the European Project EDEN. This is the third European competition since the project Eden began. The competition will be carried out every year on a different, specific topic and its aim is to make popular unknown and underdeveloped destinations with great potential. The name of the competition is “Tourism and protected area” this year. Tourism spots in protected areas and national landmarks in Bulgaria which are included in the environmental network Natura 2000 will be popularized through the competition.

Better quality of tourism services is the main goal through the popularization of nature preservation and promotion of the tourism industry in underdeveloped regions. The criteria for the estimation of the projects are divided in two groups. Each project has to prove that the destination is unknown and underdeveloped, but efforts are made to popularize it and it has a great potential. The destination is required to be innovative, stable and under control. It should have opportunities to develop tourism when the active season is closed.

Belogradchik was the destination which won the first edition of the competition “Thracian spirit”. Moreover, Belogradchik has been promoted in Europe since it won the honoured competition. European Commission has made a movie for Belogradchik which will be distributed in several ways to the mass audience.
