Cyrillic inscription discovered in Bourgas region

Antique Cyrillic inscription dated back to the beginning of 10th century was discovered in Bourgas region.
An inscription of the Old-Bulgarian name Braton, was discovered during the excavations of the fortress “Rusokastron”. The inscription was two-lined, written in Cyrillic and it dated back to the beginning of 10th century. This discovery proves the presence of Bulgarian garrison in the fortress “Rusokastron”, built 1500 years ago. The scientist Mrs.Drazheva who is a leader of the archaeological researches of “Rusokastron” said that this is the only one early Cyrillic inscription, which was found until the moment in Bourgas area. Old-Bulgarian ceramics, weapons and ornaments dated back to the 9th-10th century were also found.
The fortress is located 3 km north from the Bourgas village Rusokastro.
It was built when the Avarians invaded the territories on their way to Constantinople and set on fire the area of Eastern Thrace.
Parts of a double fortifying system, consisting of two stone walls were found during the excavations. Dozens of finds from various iron, bronze and bone arms and objects, connected to the armament of the garrison and the construction of the wooden doors and fighting paths, were discovered.
A research of two living premises was conducted. They were probably the barracks of the garrison with stables, furrieries, kitchens and other farm buildings, says Drazheva.
