Bulgaria Seduces Eco Tourists

Bulgaria has identified eco-tourism as a milestone for future tourism development, the Guardian reports. Despite Monday's article in Travel Telegraph describing Bulgaria as an awful place for holidays, the Guardian claims that the small Balkan country could offer a unique experience. The UK newspaper cites Bulgaria tourism specialist John Todd as saying that although there has been huge investment in the package-holiday resorts around the Black Sea, the country wants to develop eco tourism in the hinterland, away from the resorts, where there is an enormous amount of pristine countryside. Bulgaria already has a well-developed network of national parks and protected areas and supports some of the richest biodiversity in Europe, he said. Todd also pointed out that if you add to this an agricultural system based primarily on small organic farms, over 2,000 spas, numerous monasteries and Ancient Roman ruins, "it has great potential for developing eco-tourism in the rest of the country." Bulgaria has nine Unesco world heritage sites, including Pirin National Park and the Rila monastery, the Guardian reports. see source
