Bourgas Bay – crossroad of ancient civilizations and cultures
16.07.2013
Residents and guests of the beautiful coastal city Bourgas will be able to see a unique exhibition which is one of a kind in Bulgaria and all over the world. The cultural centre “Sea casino” has housed golden coins from the reign of Phillip II of Macedon. There are also coins from the epoch of the Byzantium emperors Constantine IV Pogonat and Justinian II. The story for the discovery of the coins from the period of Alexander the Great and his father is very interesting. They are found in the area of the village Yasna Polyana during construction works in 1963. The coins are golden ones and they are ancient Greek coins, made of gold, silver. They were used as the main monetization. 24 of them will be on display.
There will be also 43 golden dinars from the period of the Roman Empire and they will be also put on display. In case you are wondering how the residents of these lands used coins to buy goods and exchange services over 7000 years ago, then you should take a look at the artifacts, found in the mound near Atanassovsko Lake. They are also a part of the exhibition. The exhibits date back to 5200-3800 B.C. and they are a part of world’s greatest treasure of means of payment which has ever been found. The unique exhibition is organized by Bourgas municipality with the courtesy of the Regional History Museum, as well as the museums in Karnobat, Sozopol and Sredets. The cultural initiative aims to support Bourgas’ application for being European cultural capital 2019.
