Season opening On December 16 the ski season in Bansko will be officially opened with a grand celebration on the ski slopes. Like last year, the opening of the season will gather some of the world’s most famous skiers. The opening will begin with a run down the steepest piste, Tomba, by Olympic and world gold medallist Lasse Kjuse and world champion Marc Girardelli. Organisers promise a huge party at the base station of the gondola. There will be a stage where Bulgaria’s singer Rushi Vidinliev and the Netherlands’ Hermes House Band will sing. This was reported by Bulgaria in EU – Press Centre on November 30. Meanwhile, Ivan Obreikov, the manager of Ulen Ski, told The Sofia Echo that Bansko is currently the only place in Bulgaria where one can already ski. Since mid November artificial snow machines have covered with snow the Shiligarnika ski run. Wine festival For third year in a row Bansko hosted the wine festival Vinena Zavera on December 2-3. The event was held in the town’s five-star Hotel Kempinski. Wine producers from around the country presented their wines in front of a commission from Sofia’s Institute of Grape and Wine Making as well as from Bulgaria’s Association of Sommeliers. Wine-tasting, and best wine ranking were also parts of the event.
