Four pools dated back to 1st century among the findings in Bourgas

Besides Thracian tomb complex nearby Bourgas city, well-preserved remains of antique baths, which were many times being reconstructed from the middle of 1st century and later on and still remained in their original condition until 1206, when the knights of emperor Anri Flandarski, the second and the most successful emperor of Latin Empire, set them on fire. The baths are a big complex of four pool and many other premises, related to different curative activities, recreation and cultural entertainment. Their length in the direction west-east is 86m and the width is 54m. Remains with imposing architecture, massive walls, platforms, channels, smaller pools and seats are preserved. During the time of Byzantine Emperor Justinian I, baths were encircled with fortress wall and quarter numerous garrisons existed in the village near the baths. Foundations of big medieval building are discovered 200m away from the antique baths; it is supposed to have been an inn dated back to 5th -8th century.

An exploration of medieval church 9th-14th century, situated in a close proximity to the inn, has already begun. Its narthex, a part of the inner temple and eight Christian funerals are completely revealed. There is an antique building under the foundations of the church which dated back to 3d century B.C., probably it was Hellenist temple. Many archaeological findings, such as coins, glass and ceramic articles, metal objects, weapons, marble decoration details and etc., related to the antique city and mineral baths, are discovered. They will be restored and shown at a special exhibition. Aristocratic family, which was very rich, ruled over the inner part of Strandja.

Secrets of the life of Thracian ruler Cortodzuntos began to reveal, because the archaeologist Daniela Agre has been exploring his residence for a month. Her endeavours turned out to be successful in the end of the last week after she had discovered Thracian home, called ‘turzis’. She managed to examine the south fortress wall with two storey tower in front of it and she also discovered rather interesting door, situated in the south-eastern part, which will be explored in the near future.

A team of archaeologists and students came across protective yard next to the tower. Fragments of Greek dishes-amphorae, a handle of amphora’s tare and others, are found in the tower. The roof of the tower was tiled. The amazing spot is in the area Golata Niva, on the land of Sinemorets, above the mouth of Veleka River and not far away from the tomb, in which Mrs.Agre found unique gold treasure in 2006. The home itself, whose exploration is to begin, is encircled with massive fortress wall. Hellenist traditions, typical for such kind of houses, were preserved during the construction of the home, which began 2-3B.C. It requires obligatory a fortress wall and a tower, consistent with four directions of the world. In this case, high and inaccessible place was chosen for the construction of the home. This place of interest will turn into a tourist destination. “Undoubtedly this is an extraordinary spot and it will be one of the most interesting places on Bulgarian Black Sea coast.A little is known about the customs of Thracians and this makes the place very precious. The house can be related to a real name-Thracian ruler Cortodzuntos”, explained Daniela Agre. The archaeologist Dichev, who is a member of the team of Agre, thinks that the name Cortodzuntos is related to the time after the death of Alexander Makedonski and his heirs. The idea is that the historical place can turn into tourist destination.
