Unfortunately, the rural tourism in Bulgaria does not develop quite well this year. Less than 1% of Bulgarians have chosen to spend their vacation in the mountain in spite of having been provided with low prices and exotic attractions. Hotel owners in Rhodopes are affected by the crisis.
In Momchilovtsi, a popular rural tourism venue near Smolyan, the number of tourists this summer has dropped by 30% in comparison with figures from the last three years. Prices in guesthouses and family run hotels in Rhodopes vary between 10-20 EUR per person per night. Hotel owners try to attract more tourists by offering delicious Rhodope dishes, mountain biking, horse-riding and caves tours.
One of the cheapest and most attractive destinations for rural tourism, an exception of the abovementioned situation, is the village Arda. It is located in Rhodopes on Bulgarian-Greek border. Only one guesthouse was built in the village 10 years ago, but now the occupancy is over 100 beds. Here you will find 5-6 houses and some family run hotels.
