It was a last minute solution for us but it was exactly what we wanted. Very close to the beach (50m) and in the heart of the resort, beautiful sea view even from our room located on the other side of the hotel, clean nice furnished room, elegant bath, prompt staff, everything for a joyful vacation. Free parking was a pleasant surprise and also the bottle of Champagne we got from the reception since it was our first visit.
I also tried the outdoor pool for a lazy afternoon; warm water, not very crowded.
I would say is not quite a 4star hotel, but we were pleased and would go there again. Good choice for active and outgoing people looking to use their vacation time at their best for sun and fun. If you are the resort-vacation type, looking for a quiet, remote and deserted location, keep searching.

Me and my girlfriend spend a lovely week, at the beginning of September, on the Black Sea in Golden Sands. Astera Hotel is an outstanding accommodation near the downtown of the resort, on the beach (20m) and it has a beautiful view of the bay; when is clear sky you’ll see Cape Kaliakra, Balchik and Albena. The hotel, rooms, lobby, bar and restaurants are very stylish. The hotel is very clean, always is someone who polish the lobby marble. We had a very large and cozy room, nice furnished, very clean and with an impressive panorama. The services were also very good; the personnel were always nice and helpful. The food was excellent; we had a substantial buffet breakfast and dinner everyday; the food was diversified and very tasty. The hotel has a spa center with fitness, massage and inside and outside pool. The hotel has the best club in town with 4 rooms with different kind of music. They have also a guarded parking. Actually, everything was very good.

We travelled in June and very few English were in the resort, from what i have heard Sunny Beach is the Magalofe of Bulgeria, with Golden Sands being somewhat less hectic. The resort itself is very clean and typical of a beach resort, touts accosting you, buy one get one free bars etc etc. The beach is very clean and the sea always seemed wavey, not rough though, which made swimming fun! Not sure for yound kids though as this could prove quite dangerous!
In the resort are groups of lads, oh! However this are mainly Russians and Germans who are far from louts and cause no offence at all, which only goes to show how bad we British can be. Last night my Girlfriend and I walked along the beach and around 15 college students were drinking on the beach, they were making hardly any noise and were in no way threatining at all. (They were not english!!) No hoddies, no earings, no spiting, just shows you how bad our problems are as i certianly would not want to walk past the same group on an English beach!
The hotel is very nice and clearly a 4 star and measures up to all the other 4-5 star hotels i have stayed at. The pool is very good as is the gym and fitness equipment. The steam room and sauna is all extra, which is harsh, although well worth the 3 pounds to use. The life guards seem more intrested in sunbathing, so if you have kids do not rely on them!
The food is average, which along with the lits, which i will come to later is probally the worst thing about this hotel. Please don't let this put you off though as you could eat outside the hotel for as little as 15 pounds for two for a three course meal! The food is bland and does not follow any theme it supposed to, albeit one dish. Veal seemed to feature every night in some way or another, which i must say was very good.
Ok the lifts. which are the craziest lifts ever. You call a lift and wait for ages. If you are in reception and call the lift it will show its arrived only then to go back up again! It also rings when it arrives, however it rings at every floor, so you are on the 8th looking out the window, hear the ring to find its on floor 1. It also goes strait past you. If your ok with stairs use these....
The bulk of the guests were Romanina, Germans and Russians, who i must say are quite possibly the ruddest people i have ever come across. Again this will only bother you if you let as its never directed at you as its just there deminor. They walk in front of you, they never say thank you to any of the hotel staff, they click there fingers and generally think they should be waited on hand and foot. I was in the Gym when a Crotian lady, clicked her fingers at me, bleated something at me, which i didn't understand, she then pointed at the TV, clicked her fingers again so i moved the TV for her to which she just turned around and carried on peddling on the bike. Very funny!! I think she thought i worked there and when she asked again i told her and she then was very friendly. Whilst we have yob problem in England, at least the other brits i have come across are polite!
Overall, don't expect to much from Bulgeria and you will love it. It is no different to any other beach resort in Greece and Spain but has yet to have the full English Costa invasion. How long this will last, who knows?? Stick to a 4 star and up and you can't go wrong as the 2 and 3 star hotels looks old. The resort has gone through some major developement, the bulk of which being new hotels (this hotel being one of them) If you want other brits around you, then don't stay here. If this does not concern you i'd recommend this, its clean and makes an ideal base to explore Golden Sands.
